Thriving in Community
It’s been one year since Jaime and I arrived in Willits, and from the very beginning, we were welcomed with open hearts. Not just politely received, but truly welcomed—with warmth, with generosity, and with a spirit that said, “you belong here.” And over this past year, each and every one of you has filled our hearts more than we can say.
We’ve seen what a faithful, loving community looks like in action—showing up for one another, showing up for the town, and showing up for the call of Christ to serve beyond ourselves.
From a hammock swing on the parsonage deck, I attended the California-Nevada Annual Conference, Thriving in Community, online this year. Our Bishop Sandy Olewine posed a powerful question: What if, within one square mile of every United Methodist Church, there was food security, affordable housing and healthcare, a healthy environment, fair and just work, great education and care for seniors, support for working parents, and places to gather to celebrate life and connection?
That vision calls us outward. Not to grow our church for its own sake—but to grow our impact, to share our gifts, to join hands with the wider community. As Bishop Sandy said: We don’t go to the community to save it. We go because God is already there. We go because we are followers of Jesus. We go to walk alongside. So how might we reimagine our sacred spaces in this present age? How might we meet current and emerging community dreams in practical and transformational—but not transactional—ways? How must we shift, so we don’t become so inwardly focused that we miss God’s calling beyond the walls of our buildings?
Time after time, we’ve seen what thriving in community looks like when it begins with love, compassion, and a willingness to show up. The Spirit is moving. We are being called. Can ya feel it? Can ya hear it? I know you do. Us too.
Thank you for this year. We love you. We appreciate you. And we’re excited for the road ahead.
With all my heart,
Liz
